"Let us never fear to negotiate": hints and tips for dealing with vendors
10:30 - 11:00 - London Room
The
presentation will look at all aspects of interaction with suppliers, trying to
draw together principles of best practice. The speaker's years of direct
experience of managing subscriptions are supplemented by his detailed knowledge
of the problems that occur in vendor-customer relations. He has experienced the
latter from the perspective of both sides, without being beholden to either, as
he has stood between law librarians and legal publishers on numerous occasions,
trying to build working relationships beneficial to both parties.
Areas
that will be covered include:
Preparation
(records, research, reviews)
Communication
(who to talk to, how to talk to them, when to talk to them)
There
will be a particular focus on negotiating subscriptions to and licences for
electronic databases, as this is probably the area most important to and costly
for law librarians. However, the aim is to supply advice in general terms as
well as on specifics, and much of the content should be relevant to anyone who
has to deal with vendors. Reference will be made to several sources of further
advice and assistance.
Unfortunately a paper for this presentation is not yet available.
